Boeing Defense Space & Security has an exciting opportunity for a Lead, Electro-Optics & InfraRed Engineer to support a key technical thrust for the Phantom Works Special Technology Integration team in Mesa, AZ.
The successful candidate will work in an innovative, creative environment supporting the Phantom Works Acoustic-Visual Technology Thrust area. A wide range of technology applications from embryonic R&D technology to new clean sheet vehicle design are worked in this domain. The candidate will be exposed to a multidiscipline team of experts and expected to work both in small teams and autonomously. Key deliverables are supporting analysis, simulations, and/or work packages that support advanced technology development for the warfighter.
Ideal candidates should have an extensive knowledge of electro-optics, imaging & non-imaging optics, infrared (IR) technology applications as well as low observable design techniques to develop new and innovative systems and components. Candidate needs to have knowledge of optical ray tracing codes, IR modeling and simulation codes, measurement & laboratory experience with spectroradiometers and cameras and apply knowledge to integration of low observable designs with other disciplines (such as acoustics, RF, structures & materials). Candidate should be able to develop EO/IR requirements, execute statements of work, and operate in multi-disciplinary teams.
Develops and validates requirements for various complex VIS and Infrared (IR) challenges.
Develops and validates electro-optical requirements for sub-system “proof-of-concept”, prototype, and hardware design deliverables.
Develops solutions to integrate complex EO/VIS/IR systems and components into higher level systems and platforms.
Performs first order analysis of EO/IR aircraft signatures, to include acoustics.
Conducts performance analysis of EO/IR sensors.
Supports subcontract monitoring as technical advisor and subject matter expert (SME).
Performs complicated trade studies, modeling, simulation and other forms of analysis to predict component, interconnects and system performance and to optimize design around established requirements.
Defines and conducts critical tests of various kinds to validate performance of designs to requirements.
Supports NEXT GEN air vehicle integration studies and layouts, including concept exploration.
Manages appropriate aspects of critical supplier and partner performance to ensure compliance to requirements.
Provides support to products throughout their lifecycle from manufacturing to customer use by providing guidance and support to resolve complex issues.
Supports project management by providing coordinating development of work statement, budget, schedule and other required inputs and conducting appropriate reviews.
Generates major sections of proposals to support development of new business.
Works under minimal direction.
This position requires an active U.S. Secret Security Clearance (US Citizenship Required). (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active)
Basic Qualifications (Required Skill/Experience)
Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry
Experience with optical (imaging & non-imaging) fundamentals
Knowledge of ray-tracing and modeling simulations for optical design & analysis
Knowledge and experience with Infrared (IR) analysis and test measurement methodology
Experience with EO/IR test equipment (spectroradiometers, monochrometers, infrared cameras, and high-resolution imagers) to acquire spectral data.
Experience with optics labs and both indoor and outdoor/field test facilities.
Experience with modeling and simulation codes & tools that support hardware development of EO/IR solutions.
Typical Education & Experience
Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 9 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+4 years' related work experience, Master+7 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
